Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced in an internal memo to company staff on April 29 the departure of almost all of the 500-strong Tesla Supercharger team including senior director of EV charging Rebecca Tinucci.
A bp spokesperson said in a statement issued to Reuters: "We are aggressively looking to acquire real estate to scale our network, which is a heightened focus following the recent Tesla announcement."
The statement added that bp will prioritize its focus in the Northeast, West Coast, across and Sun Belt and in the Great Lakes region of the country
In March this year bp's EV charging operation bp pulse expanded its US presence with the opening of the first bp pulse-branded Gigahub at its headquarters in Houston, Texas.
bp said the Houston Gigahub aligns with its commitment to invest US$1bn in US EV charging infrastructure by 2030. EV charging is one of the company's key growth areas, alongside bioenergy, hydrogen, and renewable energy.
bp currently operates 29,000 EV chargers globally and aims to reach over 100,000 by 2030, with a focus on rapid and ultra-fast charging.
