Kunkel will take over from Roy Williamson, Gridserve’s executive chair, who took interim leadership of Gridserve last year following the departure of founder, Toddington Harper.

Kunkel joins as Gridserve continues to accelerate the rollout of High Power charging infrastructure across the UK. Now operating over 190 locations with 1,400 charging bays, Gridserve is delivering over 250,000 charging sessions monthly. With class-leading Electric Forecourts and a UK-wide network of Super Hubs, that have up to 36 charging bays at the busiest sites, Gridserve is on a mission to make EV easy and give all drivers the confidence to go electric. Already the most used network in the UK, Gridserve says it is committed to expanding and future proofing EV charging at this critical time in the transition to electric vehicles.

Kunkel joins from his role as CEO of ubitricity that grew to be one of Europe’s largest public on-street EV charging networks under his leadership, with 13,500 charge points. His tenure at Shell spanned 20 years across the customer-facing retail business and most recently, alongside his CEO role at ubitricity, Daniel was also responsible for driving world class performance across the engineering lifecycle for Shell’s 46,000 retail outlets.

Kunkel commented: “I am both honoured and excited to lead with vision, integrity, and collaboration during this exciting new chapter as CEO at Gridserve. Together with Roy and the team, we will elevate the success of Gridserve to new heights and build a future we’re proud of. I am looking forward to creating positive change together, with the customer at the heart of all we do.

Roy Williamson, executive chair of Gridserve, said: “We are really looking forward to welcoming Daniel to Gridserve. He is a perfect fit for the company with his experience in energy and EV charging. I look forward to working with Daniel on GRIDSERVE’s mission to deliver sustainable energy through EV charging at a scale that makes a difference.”

Roy Williamson will revert to previous role as chair of Gridserve working alongside the new CEO to continue to deliver an award-winning electric vehicle charging network. Kunkel will take the position of CEO in March this year.
