This ambitious regulation aims to accelerate the deployment of charging stations across major transport corridors and urban areas, supporting the EU’s goal to reduce emissions by 55% by 2030.

AFIR, introduced as part of the EU’s Fit for 55 strategy, sets out mandatory targets for the number, location, and power capacity of EV charging points across the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). Kempower’s innovative DC fast-charging solutions are designed to meet these targets, ensuring that both light- and heavy-duty EVs can charge quickly and efficiently along Europe’s highways and in urban hubs.

The AFIR regulation mandates the installation of fast-charging stations for light-duty vehicles at intervals of no more than 60 km along the TEN-T network, with each site delivering a minimum of 150 kW of power by 2025. The regulation also sets ambitious targets for heavy-duty vehicles, requiring 350 kW fast chargers to be available every 100 km by 2025, and increasing minimum power requirements to 1,500 kW by 2030.

As a part of this regulatory framework, AFIR also establishes common technical standards and ensures payment flexibility for users. All charging stations must allow easy payment via cards or contactless devices, eliminating the need for subscriptions and providing real-time information on availability, waiting times, and pricing.

Kempower’s DC fast-charging solutions are specifically designed to comply with AFIR requirements. The modular Kempower Satellite charging system offers scalable, reliable, and user-friendly charging solutions, capable of meeting both current and future targets without requiring major upgrades. Kempower’s charging solutions also support the integration of payment terminals, ensuring seamless, AFIR-compliant payment options for all users.

“AFIR sets a clear path for the future of EV charging in Europe, and we are proud to offer solutions that can help businesses and governments achieve these ambitious goals,” said Kempower’s CMO Jussi Vanhanen.

The flexibility and efficiency of Kempower’s solutions make them ideal for both light- and heavy-duty EVs. The company’s charging solutions allow for quick and powerful charging, ensuring minimal downtime for fleet operators and enabling faster turnaround times.
