Kempower’s new Plug and Charge solution simplifies the EV charging experience and payment by automating the communication and billing processes between EVs and its charging stations.

The Plug and Charge scheme will be offered as an extension of the company’s existing Kempower ChargEye charging management software and meets the latest ISO 15118-2 standard specifications. The solution is compatible with all Kempower chargers, including those already installed and operational.

As Kempower points out, one of the most significant barriers to a smooth EV transition is a poor charging experience, which discourages many drivers from adopting EVs. Studies measuring the user experience commonly identify payment as one of the biggest pain points regarding EV charging. Payment can be time-consuming and confusing for drivers, with public charging a particularly frustrating experience.

The company’s new Plug and Charge solution removes this problem by enabling users to simply plug in their vehicle and continue their journey after charging without engaging in a lengthy billing process. It also eliminates the need for radio-frequency identification cards or charging apps to use charging points while ensuring high IT security.

Charging point operators that use Kempower ChargEye can now subscribe to the company’s software update to implement Plug and Charge with their own systems and at their charging stations on a case-by-case basis. The solution is compatible with all Kempower chargers, including those already installed and operational.

“We’ve always placed user experience and reliability at the center of all our charging solutions, so we’re delighted to make charging experiences even smoother for EV drivers with our new Plug and Charge solution. The new Plug and Charge solution follows the latest ISO 15118-2 specifications, meaning our customers can confidently provide a new industry standard of charging experience at their charging stations,” said Jussi Vanhanen, Kempower’s chief market officer. “Our new Plug and Charge solution not only simplifies the charging process for EV drivers but is also easy to implement for our customers as it is an extension of our existing Kempower ChargEye software. Kempower ChargEye handles all the automation of the billing process, making integration incredibly simple for our customers.”

Plug and Charge is already compatible with some manufacturers’ EVs, and Kempower expects all major manufacturers to announce that they will soon upgrade their vehicles to support Plug and Charge.
